MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is a standard way for an AI client to work with an app. LazyReel exposes the active project as structured context and makes its editing actions available as permission-scoped tools.

Connect your first agent.
The app builds the correct configuration for your installed LazyReel copy. You do not need to find scripts or edit paths by hand.
Open LazyReel and confirm Pro access
Use a LazyReel Pro license or an active Setapp subscription. Keep LazyReel running while the agent is connected.
Open the MCP Preview settings
Go to Settings, choose Integrations, then open MCP Preview.

Select Enable MCP. LazyReel stores the connection credential in macOS Keychain and starts its local bridge.
Choose your AI client
Pick Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, ChatGPT, or Generic MCP. LazyReel shows the exact setup for that client.
Install or copy the setup
Use Install / Repair when the client supports safe configuration updates. LazyReel backs up the existing file and preserves other MCP servers. Otherwise choose Copy setup and paste the shown configuration into your client.
Restart the AI client
Quit and reopen the client so it discovers LazyReel. Leave the LazyReel app open with a project loaded.

Read the active project, playhead, media, layers, captions, audio timing, versions, export support, and edit quality without making changes.

Trim, split, reorder, remove fillers and silence, generate captions, style text, add cards, refine pacing, apply brand kits, and manage audio or recording zooms.

Permission scoped by design.
Each connected client has its own permissions. Reading a project does not automatically grant editing, media search, recording, paid generation, export, or publishing access.
- ✓Read-only by default. Every new client starts with project-read access only.
- ✓Separate sensitive scopes. Paid AI, cloned voice, recording, export, and external publishing are independently controlled.
- ✓Visible confirmation. Sensitive operations ask in LazyReel before running.
- ✓Private diagnostics. Copied diagnostics exclude prompts, transcript text, filenames, file paths, URLs, keys, and connection tokens.
- ✓Per-client control. Disconnect one client, revoke a permission, disconnect all clients, or regenerate the connection token from Settings.
When the agent cannot see LazyReel.
- 1Confirm LazyReel is open. The local MCP server connects to the running app, so your agent cannot edit while LazyReel is closed.
- 2Open a project. Project and timeline requests need an active project in the editor.
- 3Check MCP enabled. In Settings → Integrations → MCP Preview, Connection should say Ready.
- 4Restart the AI client. Most clients discover MCP servers only when they launch.
- 5Use Install / Repair. Run it again after moving, updating, or reinstalling LazyReel.
- 6Check the requested permission. If a read works but an edit does not, enable the matching scope for that connected client.
- 7Regenerate the token. If authentication still fails, regenerate the connection token, then reconnect the client.

Is MCP available on the free plan?
No. MCP Preview is a Pro feature and is also available to eligible Setapp members.
Does the agent get access to every project on my Mac?
No. The agent receives bounded LazyReel resources and stable project identifiers through the app. Open the project you want it to work with, and grant only the scopes that workflow needs.
Can an agent silently change my timeline?
Plan-based editing stays unapplied until you review it in LazyReel. Sensitive actions also require visible confirmation. Approved plan operations are applied as one undoable transaction.
Does my media upload to LazyReel servers?
The MCP connection itself is local to your Mac. Some requested features, such as web search or configured AI providers, may use their respective online services. LazyReel keeps those behind separate permissions and confirmation.
Why does a development setup show a repository path?
That is only for local developer testing. Customer releases launch the MCP server bundled inside LazyReel.app. Use the configuration generated by the installed app.
Can the agent publish directly to social platforms?
The current tool prepares approved assets and metadata for external publishing. It does not claim unsupported direct posting. The final handoff stays visible to you.
What happens if a long task is still running?
Your agent can inspect job progress and cancel supported jobs. LazyReel also exposes recent MCP activity in Settings so you can see what was requested and how it finished.
